OCEAN PINES — Dennis Eugene Allred, age 65, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2016 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake.

Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Jerry Allred and Dorothy Lewandowski Allred. He is survived by his beloved wife, Christine Jakubowski Allred, and daughters, Angela Allred of Glen Burnie, and Carla Staubs and her husband Dirk of Ocean Pines. There are five grandchildren, Alec Kirby, Gavin Staubs, Lily Staubs, Dominic Allred, and Kamron Hebron. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Allred. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Allred was a computer programmer working for the Department of Defense, NSA, at Ft. Meade. Dennis was a United States Marine Veteran having served in Vietnam. He was a member of the Sinepuxent American Legion Post 166 in Ocean City and was a Ravens fan.

A celebration of his life will be held at the home of his daughter on Saturday Feb. 13, 2016. Friends are welcome to stop by between 2-7 p.m. An inurnment service at the Crownsville, Md. OCEAN CITY — Mary Ann Armstrong (nee Manarczyk) died peacefully at her home in Ocean City on Feb. 5, 2016.

She was born Dec. 4, 1937 in Mount Pleasant, Pa. Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Dr. Ronald William Armstrong; daughters Lisa Armstrong (Fred Kaulbach) and Lori Armstrong; and five grandchildren, Maximiliaan, Jasia, Griffin, and Kate Kaulbach, and Colt Hanlin. Mary Ann was an adventurous, independent soul, extremely generous and loving to her family and friends who will miss her dearly. She lived an exciting and full life travelling the world with her family despite fighting a heroic 23 year battle with multiple myeloma cancer. She worked as an administrative assistant after she raised her two daughters, managing executives in the public and private sectors, most recently at the University of Maryland System Foundation in College Park. She served as Co-President of the University of Maryland Faculty Wives Club from 1970-1972.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony Manarczyk and Joann Jezewski Manarczyk and her brother, Joseph Manarczyk.

Celebrations of Mary Ann’s life will be held at a later time privately. In lieu of flowers, contribution can be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (www.themmrf.org).

OCEAN CITY — Thomas Zacharopoulos, age 69, died Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, in his home surrounded by his family.

Born in Patras, Greece, he was the son of the late Elias Zacharopoulos and Ioanna (Drosopoulos). He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Ioanna (Kaouris). He was the devoted father of Adamadia Putsch and her husband Matthew Putsch of Ocean Pines, Elias Zacharopoulos of Ocean City and Demetrios Zacharpoulos and his wife Gretchen Dickinson of Baltimore. He was the dear grandfather of Anna Putsch, Henry Putsch, Keller Zacharopoulos, Maxwell Zacharopoulos, and Caroline Zacharopoulos. Also surviving is a brother, Vasilios Zacharopoulos, and sisters, Eleni Heilakis and her husband George, Koula Mazos and her husband George and Marianna Kondogeorgopoulos and her husband Demetrios, all of Patras, Greece. There are numerous nieces and nephews.

Thomas and his wife immigrated together from Greece in 1968 to Montreal, Canada and later to Salisbury. After the birth of their first child, they settled in Ocean City. They opened Tommy’s Sub Shop in 1978 and successfully ran their business for 35 years. Thomas worked hard his entire life to provide for his family.

Friends called on Thursday evening, Feb. 18 at the Burbage Funeral Home, 108 William St., Berlin. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 at 11 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Ocean City. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Berlin. James Franklin Brent

OCEAN CITY — James Franklin Brent, 84, of Ocean City, passed peacefully on Feb. 12, 2016 at his home surrounded by loving family members.

James was from Baltimore and worked 40 years as a Branch Manager for Baltimore Oxygen Supply Co. He is preceded in death by the passing of wife, Ann Brent and son, John Brent in 2015. He is survived by his sons James Brent and Colt Brent, son in law John Speir, daughter Ginger Speir, daughter in law Marsha Dryle and grandchildren DJ Speir and Brandi Speir.

Harry S. Groton, Jr.

OCEAN PINES — Harry Stroble Groton, Jr., 66, of Ocean Pines, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016 at his residence.

Born Nov. 17, 1949 in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Harry S. Groton, Sr. and Dorothy Wanex Groton.

He graduated from Saints Peter & Paul High School in Easton, from Marion College Indiana in 1971 and from University of Baltimore Law School in 1980. He worked for a short time for Parole and Probation in Talbot County and then opened his law practice in Berlin in 1983 where he was still working at the time of his death.

He is survived by a brother, Ben Groton (Jackie); a sister, Gwen Chalmers (Billy); nieces and nephews

Caitlin, Connor, Brooks and Brennan Chalmers, Drew Groton and Ali Groton Tejeda; and a long- time companion, Tracy Richstone.

A celebration of Harry’s life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016 from 3-6 p.m. at the  Berlin Lions Club.

SELBYVILLE — Tracy Lynn Rzepkowski, age 57, of Selbyville died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016 at home.

Tracy was born in Altoona, Pa. and was the daughter of the late Harvey and Dorothy (Miller) Clark.

She worked for many years as a special education teacher for Worcester County Board Of Education and was a member of Wilson United Methodist Church in Bishopville.

Tracy looked forward to visits from her brother from Virginia. She had a designing flair and loved to shop antique places with her close friends. She was a great homemaker for her family and had a strong Christian faith that inspired her family and friends. For the last 8 years despite the cancer, she lived her life to the fullest.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel J. Rzepkowski of Selbyville; a son, John D. Rzepkowski of Selbyville; a brother, Kevin Clark of Harrisonburg, Va.; two brother-in-laws, Tom Rzepkowski and Mike Rzepkowski; three sister-in-laws, Ellen Rice, Kathy Rzepkowski, and Barbara Lloyd; and multiple nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Dan’s parents, Daniel J. Sr. and Joan Rzepkowski.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Zion UMC in Bishopville with Rev. Dean Perdue officiating.

Russell Calvert Dashiell

SALISBURY — Russell Calvert Dashiell, 94, a resident of Salisbury and Ocean City, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016 at home. Born in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late J. Roland Dashiell, Sr. and Doris Disharoon Dashiell.

He attended Wicomico High School and in World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. His Engineer Battalion was at Normandy, The Bulge and the Remagen Bridge. A witness to history, he never played up his experience in the service of his country but retained a lifelong hatred of Spam. Upon his discharge, he returned to Salisbury and went to work in his family’s business, J. Roland Dashiell & Sons, Inc., General Contractors. He spent his entire professional life as a partner in the business working alongside his brothers and brothers-in-law. He retired in 1992 and enjoyed his retirement immensely. He was married to the love of his life, Charlotte Brown Dashiell, for 65 wonderful years, who predeceased him in 2013.

He was a lifelong and devoted member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Salisbury and attended Atlantic Methodist Church in Ocean City. He was also a member of Green Hill Yacht and Country Club and the Ocean City Golf and Yacht Club. Also, he served on the Board of the John B. Parsons Home. His interests were golf, boating and fishing.

He was predeceased by his siblings and their spouses, O. Woodland Dashiell (Peggy), J. Roland “Buck” Dashiell, Jr. (Dorothy), Elinor Dashiell Boccia (Pat), Elizabeth Dashiell Brown (Joseph), Bruce M. Dashiell (Andy) (Joan), Donald L. Dashiell (Shirley) and Robert Dale (Bunky) Dashiell.

He is survived by three sons, Russell C. Dashiell, Jr. and his wife, Jo Ann Forbes Dashiell, Charles B. Dashiell, and Jeffrey D. Dashiell and his wife, Tina Tara Dashiell; grandchildren, Chase Dashiell, Hannah Dashiell Vernooy and her husband, Mike, Haley Dashiell and Maggie Dashiell; sister-in-law, June T. Dashiell; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church, Camden Avenue in Salisbury, MD on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016 at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior.

Joan Wolf Browne

CHESTERTOWN — Joan Wolf Browne, of Chestertown, died on Feb. 20, 2016 at Compass Regional Hospice House in Centreville.

She was 80. She was born in Philadelphia on Dec. 6, 1935, the daughter of the late Russell T. and Annamae Becker Wolf. She was a graduate of John Bartram High School class of 1953. She was married to Donald K. Forbes for 18 years and had two children. She later remarried in 1978 to the love of her life, L. Stevens “Steve” Browne of Denton. They resided in Chestertown where she worked at Washington College as a data manager from 1973 until she retired in 1998.

Mrs. Browne is a member of the International Red Hat Society, belonging to both the Ancient Mary Landers Chapter and the Little Red Hatted Hens Chapter. She was also a previous member of the Republicans of Kent. She enjoyed horseback riding and dancing in her early years and later crocheting, knitting, sketching, making jewelry and being entertained at Dover Downs.

She is survived by her daughter, Dawn West of Millington; a son, Mark Forbes of New York; along with grandchildren Beverly Erin Hall and Steven West; and great grandchildren Alexander Hall and Keaira Hall.

OCEAN CITY — Wade Forrest Johnson, 41, died unexpectedly on Feb. 21 at PRMC in Salisbury.

Born a native of Ocean City, he was the son of beloved parents Forrest and Phyllis Johnson of Ocean City. Also surviving is adored son Henry Johnson Winter; fiancé Sharon Winter; sister Jennifer Johnson; niece Rachel Hreshko of Ocean City; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in Florida, California and Colorado.

A 1992 graduate of Stephen Decatur High School, he proudly worked many years in our local restaurant community. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion. His passions included surfing, skateboarding and fishing. He was a free spirit with a kind and loving heart who will be dearly missed by all of his family and friends who have lost “one of a kind.”

LIBERTYTOWN — Barbara Downs Littleton, age 81, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016 at her home.

Born in Newark, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Catherine Pusey Downs. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard E. Bishop, in 1999. She is survived by her husband, Vincent G. Littleton of Libertytown; son Paul W. Bishop and his wife Mary Lou of Libertytown; daughter Nancy Bishop Bailey and her companion Scott Manning of Mission Vijco, Calif.; stepsons Vince Edward Littleton of Pittsville and Davis Littleton and his wife Lou Ann of Bishopville; and step daughter Tracy Lynn Davis of Ocean Pines. There are two grandchildren, Crystal Bishop Warren and her husband Eddie and Chad Bishop and step-grandchildren, Hannah, Devina and Phillip Littleton. There are three great-grandchildren, Bailey, Blaine, and Brooke Warren and four step great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Tanley, Sawyer and Isabelle Littleton. Also surviving is a sister, Hilda “Kelly” Woods of Libertytown, and two brothers, Richard Downs of Chesapeake, Va. and Joseph Downs of Berlin. There are several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Littleton had worked at the Berlin Shirt Factory and had been the owner/operator of the Libertytown Country Store for many years. She had also been active with her late husband Howard in the operation of their poultry and farming business. She was also the caretaker of Oakhall Riverside Cemetery in Libertytown and was a member of Faith Chapel Presbyterian Church.

A funeral service was held Feb. 28 at Faith Chapel Presbyterian Church. Pastor Pam Ruarke officiated. Interment followed in Riverside Cemetery. Dorothy Fried Givarz

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Dorothy Givarz peacefully passed away on Friday, Feb. 26, 2016, at her home in Williamsburg, Va. after a brief illness.

Born on Christmas Eve in 1918, she survived the great flu epidemic, although her mother, Sadie Fried, did not. Raised by her father Harry Fried and her paternal grandparents in Baltimore, she graduated from Western High School in 1937. Ms. Givarz then worked in Washington, DC until she met her future husband, Jerry Givarz, while he was stationed in Pensacola, Fla. as a naval aviator during the second world war. They returned to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1947 and lived and raised their family in Salisbury. During the summers, she and her husband ran the Alaska Stand in Ocean City, the family’s business founded in 1933. Her son continues to operate the Alaska Stand today.

Ms. Givarz exhibited a great sense of humor and a keen understanding of people whom she met from all walks of life. Always engaged in conversation with friends, new and old, she exhibited great insight, a sparkling sense of humor and quick wit.

The first of five generations, she is survived by her daughter, Leslye Givarz (Ken Kambis) of Williamsburg, Va. and Robert Givarz of Ocean City, Md.; granddaughter Jodi Renner (Dennis Renner), great-grandchildren, Chris (Monica) of Glen Allen, Va., Chad Renner (St. Petersburg, Fla.), and Drake and Sadie Renner of Williamsburg, Va.; great-great granddaughters Chloe and Claire Renner; and great-great grandson Corbin Renner of Richmond, Va.

Funeral services were held Feb. 29 at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. Rabbi Arnold Bienstock officiated. Interment followed the service will be at Beth Israel Cemetery in Salisbury. Reception following at Brew River Restaurant in Salisbury.

Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Hazel Kettler West. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles L. Follmer, Sr. in 1991. She is survived by her children, Charles L. Follmer, Jr. “Buzz” and his wife Jane of Cambridge and Pamela O’Meara Marshall of Ocean City. She was adored grandmother to William Follmer of Washington, DC and Kaitlin Follmer of Baltimore, Margaret O’Meara and her husband Ryan Raynis of Rumson, N.J., Cass O’Meara of Jersey City, N.J., Kristin O’Meara of Baltimore and Reagan O’Meara of Ocean City and great-grandchildren, Jake and Jude Raynis.

Mrs. Follmer spent most of her life in Baltimore where she and her husband raised their family. Jo was President of the Women’s Club of Roland Park, member and past President of the Ladies Nine Hole Group at the Baltimore Country Club, and was overseer of the McDonogh School Bazaar for two years.

Nathan W. Burcker

PITTSVILLE — Nathan W. Burcker, (Jim) age 77, born on Feb. 27, 1939, passed away on Feb. 29, 2016.

Born in Charles Town, W.Va., he was the son of the late Nathan Alfred Burcker and Rosa Mae Dodson Burcker.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jane Gray Burcker, children Richard and his wife Linda, Gloria and her husband Paul, David, Crystal, daughter-in-law Darlene, grandchildren Paul Nathaniel, James Walter, Linda Marie and Kristy Leigh, great-grandchildren Rachael, Troy, Eva, Amber, and Kira and brothers Robert, Raymond, and his sister Charlotte Weaning. He is preceded in death by a son Greg, brother Douglas Montgomery and sisters Geraldine Willingham and Shirley Edwards.

Nathan (Jim) was a Veteran served the active Army National Guard Reserves for two years and six years in inactive Army Reserves. Before relocating to Maryland, he worked at Badger Fire Extinguisher Company. After relocating to Maryland he worked at Carroll Manor Nursing Home for 30 years. After retiring from Carroll Manor, he worked as Security Guard at Ocean Downs for seven years. Nathan (Jim) enjoyed playing horseshoes, Nascar Racing, the Redskins. His biggest passion was his family and spending time with them.

His funeral service will be held Friday, March 4 at 1 p.m. at the Community Church in Ocean Pines, Rev. Boyd Etter will officiate. Friends may call one hour prior at the church. OCEAN CITY — Richard Thomas LeCates, 81, of Ocean City, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.

He was born on Oct. 29, 1934 in Salisbury to Harry Thomas and Ethel C. LeCates, deceased. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Leah Meledones LeCates, his son, Richard H. LeCates, and his daughter, Terri Lynn Stone (Jeffrey). He is also survived by a grandson, Jonathan Batuyong (Erin); a granddaughter, Andrea Betancourt (Alex); a great grandson, Michael Batuyong; and a nephew, Jeffrey LeCates. Richard is also survived by a brother-in-law, Dean Meledones (Mary Slaughter); a nephew, Damon Meledones (Angela Haren); and a great nephew, Nikos Meledones.

Richard grew up in Salisbury and graduated from Wicomico High School in 1952. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. He married Leah Meledones LeCates in Ocean City in 1987. He was widely acclaimed as a real estate developer in Ocean City since 1970. He was president of the Developers’ Association of Ocean City for several years and was a real estate broker in both Maryland and Delaware. Richard gained recognition for “rescuing” a number of properties in Ocean City. He completed construction and managed The Carousel Hotel and “saved” countless bankrupt properties.

Since 1980, Richard was instrumental in developing more than 10 properties in Ocean City, including The Quarters, The White Marlin, The Blue Marlin, Marina Cove, Spyglass Cove and Berlin’s large Decatur Farms property.

An avid boater, Richard was a member of the Wicomico Yacht Club for over 20 years, serving on the Board during his tenure.

In Richard’s words, “It was quite a ride.”

Funeral services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 112 High Street, Salisbury, MD 21801 on Monday, March 7, 2016. Visitation will be at 10 a.m., and the service will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will immediately follow the service at Wicomico Memorial Park, 721 Snow Hill Rd. in Salisbury. James Burton Baker

OCEAN CITY – James Burton “Big Bake” Baker Sr. 78, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 11, 2016, at the Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin.

Born in Southampton, N.Y., he was the son of the late Cyrus and Betsey Taylor Baker. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean Aydelotte Baker, and sister, Susan Taylor Baker.

He is survived by his son, James B. Baker Jr., and his wife, Lynne, of Bishopville, and grandson Austin James Baker.

Big Bake was a 1955 graduate of Stephen Decatur High School. During the summer, he worked beach stands in Ocean City, where he rented surf mats and umbrellas. After graduation, he worked for Wainwright’s Tire Center in Berlin and the Berlin Police Department. He retired after 30-plus years with the Ocean City Police Department.

He was a member of the Redman’s Lodge, Ocean City Fire Company (Gold Badge), and F.O.P. Lodge 10, and the First Presbyterian Church of Ocean City.

Bake was a much-loved and well-respected member of the community. You would be hard put to find a local who couldn’t tell you a story about him.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 15, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ocean City. The Rev. Olin Shockley officiated. Interment followed in Sunset Memorial Park.

Paul Ellsworth McGinn

OCEAN CITY – Paul “Fuzzy” Mc-Ginn, 95, of Baltimore and Ocean City, died on March 11, 2016.

He is survived by his daughter, Janice Conner, granddaughters Rachel Jones (Shawn), Claire Otterbein (Chris), great-granddaughter Lily Jones, son-in-law Steven Gaylor along with wife Jeannie and daughters Michelle and Gina, and niece Patricia Austin (Hermie).

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marie McGinn, children Susan Gaylor, Paul McGinn Jr. and infant Bridget McGinn, granddaughters Jennifer and Katie Gaylor and brothers Richard and Edward McGinn.

Paul was born on Dec. 16, 1920, to parents Bessie “Lily” and Edward McGinn.

He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and retired after a long career at C&P Telephone, where we worked his way up from lineman to engineer.

Paul served 20 missions as an armored gunner in World War II. He was an avid fisherman who loved being on the water. He will be remembered for his dedication to his family.

A funeral is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. on March 18 at the chapel at Oak Crest Village in Parkville, Md. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Paul’s life.

Dorothy I. Blalock

OCEAN CITY – Dorothy I. Blalock, age 93, of Ocean City, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2016.

Dorothy retired from St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore where she was a nurse. She was active in Friends of the Library in Ocean City.

Her husband, Oscar “OJ” Blalock, passed away in 1986.

She is survived by two daughters, Penny Szczepanski and Robyn White, a son, Gregory Blalock, and daughter-in-law, Marylynn, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

William Tim Rayne, Sr.

BERLIN — William Tim Rayne, Sr., age 88, died Thursday March 17, 2016 at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

Born in Bishopville, he was the son of the late William D. Rayne and Mary Esham Rayne Hastings. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Christine Cropper Rayne and his son William Tim Rayne, Jr. of Berlin. Also surviving is his sister, Martha Rayne Hastings and her husband Wayne and a brother Denman Esham Rayne, “Denny” and his wife Joanne, all of Berlin. There are several nieces and nephews. Tim was a graduate of Buckingham High School Class of 1944. He was active as a coach with Berlin Little League and Pop Warner Football. He supported and worked to establish football in Worcester County High Schools. Mr. Rayne had been the owner and operator with his wife of Rayne’s Reef Luncheonette, formerly Conley and Rayne Luncheonette, on Main St. in Berlin.

He was a member of Stevenson United Methodist Church for 80 years, life member of the Berlin Lion’s Club, served on the Board of Directors of the Berlin Savings and Loan, was a town councilman for 12 years and was most proud of their accomplishment in establishing the Calvin B. Taylor Museum for the Town. He received the prestigious Berlin Citizen of the Year Award along with his wife in 2008 and a resolution from the Maryland House of Delegates for outstanding service to the community. He also had served as a United States Merchant Marine. Services were held. BERLIN — Patricia A. “Pat” Griffith, 74, died Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

She was a long-time resident of Mt. Airy, Md., until she retired and moved to West Ocean City and became the original Fancy Beach Lady. She was the loving and devoted wife to the late Edward Griffith, Jr., whom she married Sept. 26, 1959.

Born Sept. 13, 1941 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Doris H. Landgraf Slivecky and John Kutcher.

Surviving are her children, Eddie “Sonny” (Carolyn) Griffith, Robin Griffith (Kevin) Grove and Lisa (Richard) Griffith; grandchildren Ricky Harrison, Brandon Harrison, Marshall Hanselman, Kari Calhoun, Kevin Griffith, Kelli Griffith, Ty Griffith and Lydia Griffith; great-grandchildren Lily, Charlotte, Ally, Ava, Ana, Brandon, Jr., Alyssa, Kalleigh, Kevin, Jr., Steven and Krista; sister, Helen Fader Arthur; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by son, George Griffith, in 2015.

She was a proud graduate of TCHS of Baltimore. Her long career in the banking industry was marked by numerous promotions, awards and achievements. She was an inspiring woman of God whose faith ran deep and was reflected in every aspect of her life. She was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Union Bridge, Md. and a member of the Holy Savior/St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Ocean City, MD where she was a member of the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary Group.

Pat’s life was a testament to the true meaning of family. She cherished her family above all else and was happiest when surrounded by her loved ones. She enjoyed celebrating at family gatherings, reading, gardening, debating politics, and her outings with her fellow Fancy Beach Ladies; Helen, Nancy, and Char and as a member of the Seaside Red Hatters.

OCEAN PINES — Harriet M. Grady, age 84, of Ocean Pines, passed away on March 15, 2016.

Born in Boston, Mass., on April 22, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Margaret Knowlton. Harriet enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and being a member of Community Church at Ocean Pines. She is survived by her husband, Robert Grady; children Robert Grady and his wife Janine, Michael Grady and his wife Nancy, Maureen Stage and her husband Jim, Susan Ballard and her husband Michael, Kathy Fowler and her husband Jim; seven grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her brother, Everett Knowlton.

Born in Salisbury, he was the son of the late James William Hall, Jr. and Ruth Willey Hall. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, with whom he had made his home for 21 years, and his two children, Andrew Hall and his wife Jennifer of Snow Hill, and Denise Mills and her husband Mike of Berlin. He is also survived by a sister, Linda Hall Hastings, of Berlin. There are three step-children, Brian Tinnell and his wife Heather of Afton, Va., Adam Tinnell and his wife Lindy of Berlin and Alison Ardis of Ocean City. He was an adored grandfather of nine grandchildren, Kristin, Jessica, Cody, Shelly, Savannah, Sage, Shelby, Coyote, and Mason, and one great-granddaughter, Macie.

Mr. Hall was a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School, Class of 1962, and was a member of Buckingham Presbyterian Church in Berlin. He had owned Bill Hall Exxon on Route 50 and Main Street in Berlin, Bill Hall Ford in Berlin and the Mucky Duck on Assateague Road across from Frontier Town.

He served on the First Congressional District Military Academy Committee, which was responsible for the induction of students into the military academies. He also served with the White House Conference on small businesses. He was former United States Congressman Roy Dyson’s campaign manager for the Eastern Shore. He also served on numerous Ford Dealer Committees nationwide.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, at 11 a.m. at Buckingham Presbyterian Church on 20 South Main St., Berlin. Rev. Matt Trask will officiate. David Sylvester

BERLIN — David Sylvester, most recently of Fort Myers, Fla., died March 15, 2016. He was 90 years old.

He was born in Solon, Maine in 1926. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, and son, Richard. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Julien and Maurice, and a sister, Kay.

He is survived by two sons, Kenneth and Russell; a friend, Donna; a daughter-in-law, Joanne; and several nieces and nephews.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1949. He earned his degree in mechanical engineering in 1952 from the University of Maine. He served as an engineer from 1952 to 1971 at AAI in Cockeysville. He was a constructional engineer at his own business SYLCO in Worcester County from 1971 to 1995.

Burial and memorial service were private at Dulaney Valley Gardens.

Mary Rose Belsinger Wooten

BERLIN — Mary Rose Belsinger Wooten, age 76, passed away March 10, 2016 at her home in Sharpsburg, Ga.Obits A-Wooten

Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late George Chester Belsinger and Mary Rose Sjoberg. Mary Rose is preceded in life by her late brother, George C. Belsinger. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, John H. Wooten, and son, John H. Wooten Jr. “Jack” and his wife Tina H. Wooten. Also surviving are her three grandchildren, John H Wooten III, Phillip Tyler Wooten and Griffin Thomas Wooten; nieces Laura B. Greaves and Susan Belsinger; and nephew George C. Belsinger Jr. Mary Rose is also survived by numerous members of the Wooten family on the Delmarva Peninsula.

Mary Rose received her teaching degree from Towson State University in 1962 and after marriage became a longtime resident of Berlin. She proudly served 30 years as an educator for the Worcester County Board of Education. Mary Rose also served as a member of the National Education Association, Worcester County Teacher’s Association, American Legion Post #123 Boggs Disharoon, PRMC Junior Auxiliary Board and volunteered for many other local community groups. Being a devout catholic, she was a parishioner and active member of St. Mary Star of the Sea parish for over 30 years.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life Service at Buckingham Elementary School on June 4 at 10:30 a.m.

Jean Florence Kirk Shiflet

MANASSAS, Va. — Jean Florence Kirk Shiflet, of Manassas, Va., died at The Fairmont Retirement Home on March 17, 2016 of natural causes. She was 94.

She was born March 17, 1922 in Elizabeth, N.J. to Lillian Mills and John H. A. Kirk. Her family later moved to Roselle, N.J. where she resided until the age of 19. After graduating from high school in 1940, Jean worked for the Prudential Insurance Company.Obits B-Shiflet

On Christmas Eve, 1941, the future Mrs. Shiflet married Kenneth E. Shiflet of Cranford, N.J. Mrs. Shiflet was a military wife for the 31 years of her husband’s Army career. In addition to living on many military posts and stateside assignments in the U.S., Mrs. Shiflet also accompanied her husband on to Ecuador in the early 1950s and to Germany in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Mrs. Shiflet and her husband spent many happy years together, traveling to many states and other countries, particularly in South America and Western Europe. Mrs. Shiflet particularly enjoyed her trips to the Netherlands to enjoy the tulips.

After her husband’s retirement from the Army in 1972, Mrs. Shiflet and her husband resided in Lake Barcroft, Falls Church, V. with their youngest son, Jeffrey. Colonel Shiflet died of cancer in 1978 and Mrs. Shiflet and Jeffrey, who was still in high school, remained in Lake Barcroft until 1986. During her time in Lake Barcroft, Mrs. Shiflet and her husband were members of Saint Alban’s Episcopal Church in Annandale, Va.; Mrs. Shiflet and Jeffrey were later members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Annandale.

After her husband’s death, she worked for Congressional Schools of Virginia in Falls Church and Fairfax County Schools. Having not previously completed college, at 60, Mrs. Shiflet returned to school, graduating with an Associate’s Degree (with honors) from Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale and later a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work (specializing in Psychology and Gerontology) from George Mason University, Fairfax; and Brigham Young University in Laie, Hawaii. Mrs. Shiflet received many honors during her college career, graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1991 and was inducted as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa and Psi Chi honors fraternities. She was also honored in Who’s Who in American Colleges. Mrs. Shiflet pursued Master’s degree work in Gerontology at George Mason University in the early 1990s.

Between 1991 and 2010, Mrs. Shiflet resided in Ocean City, a place she had always enjoyed visiting for summer vacations with her husband and family since the early 1960s. For years, Mrs. Shiflet was a member of and volunteer at the Church of the Holy Spirit (now Charismatic Episcopal Church) in Berlin and active in many social and senior’s groups in the Ocean City area. She also enjoyed gardening (her flowers and garden were often highlighted in local papers) and traveling with local senior’s groups. Mrs. Shiflet moved to Manassas, Va. in 2010, taking up residence at the Fairmont Retirement Home, to be closer to her youngest son, his wife and her two grandchildren. In her remaining years, Jean continued to enjoy trips with her family, particularly with her many grand- and great-grand children, to the beach and Disney World; participating in Sunday church services at the Fairmont; and engaging in the many social events and other activities held at the Fairmont.

During her life, Mrs. Shiflet was a member of the Army Navy Country Club, Retired Officers Association, National Association for Uniformed Services, Society of Military Widows, Gold Star Wives, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, AARP, Singles on the Shore, and the Ocean City Health and Racquet Club.

Mrs. Shiflet and her husband had four children, Kenneth David (deceased, infant), Bonnie Jeanne of Parsons, W.Va.; Robert Kirk (Captain, USN, Ret.) of Littleton, Colo. and Jeffrey Woodson, of Bristow, Va. Bonnie Jeanne is married to James D. Parsons and they reside in Parsons, W.Va. Robert Kirk is married to the former Debra Branan of Upper Marlboro, Md. They reside in Littleton, Colo. Jeffrey Woodson is married to the former Cynthia Smith of Red Creek, W.Va. They reside in Bristow, Va.

In addition to her surviving children, Mrs. Shiflet is survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren include Sherry Parsons Ramsey of Morgantown, W.Va. (married to Terry Ramsey); Donna Jean Parsons Hardy of Hurricane, W.Va. (married to Jeffrey Hardy); Brenda Parsons Overstreet, of Morgantown, W.Va. (married to Dwight Overstreet); Kenneth Kirk Shiflet of Littleton, Colo. (fiance’, Olivia Martinez); Walker Woodson Shiflet of Hermosa Beach, Calif. (married to Amber Klinck); and Brett Woodson and Claire Marie Shiflet of Bristow, Va. Her great-grandchildren include Haley and Jayden Ramsey, Christian and Codi Hardy, Reese Overstreet, Skye Shiflet and Damien Martinez.

She is also survived by two sisters, Audrey Kirk Collins of Weeki Wachi, Fla. and Vivian Kirk Ogden of East Brunswick (Old Bridge), N.J., and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Shiflet will be interred alongside her husband of 37 years at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. A memorial service is planned at the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Manassas, Va. at 2 p.m. on April 9, 2016. OCEAN CITY — John Thomas Fisher, “Jack”, age 95, died Monday March 28, 2016 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Kearny, N.J., he was the son of the late Louis and Mary Fanning Fisher. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, June Griffith Fisher. and daughter Jacquie Hand and her husband Bill of Berlin. He was an adored grandfather to Kristin Lewis, Heather Hand and Whitney Howell and great grandson Jackson Joseph Howell. Mr. Fisher was a United States Coast Guard Veteran. He had been owner/operator of the “Jackspot Lounge” in Ocean City. He was a member of St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Post Commander of Sinepuxent American Legion Post # 166 and member of the Worcester County Liquor Control Board. Jack was instrumental in the formation of the Ocean City softball leagues and was also active in fundraising for the American Kidney Foundation.

BERLIN — Dorothy Widgeon-Combs, 89, of Berlin, died Monday, March 28, 2016, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.

Dorothy graduated from Pittsville High School. She drove a school bus for Worcester County for over 25 years, a job she truly enjoyed. She was a long-time member of Faith Chapel Church in Libertytown where she played the organ and piano and served as choir director. She also served as a 4-H leader in Worcester County for several years with her late husband, James. She loved to fish, sew and crochet, play dominoes and was a wonderful cook. Dorothy will be remembered as someone who was always willing to lend a hand to those in need and volunteered at the Berlin Nursing Home for 10 years, where she developed many wonderful friendships. She is survived by daughters Carolyn Jones of Salisbury and Sue Henman and husband, Tom of Newark; sons Walter Bryan Widgeon and wife, Kimberly and Richard William Widgeon and wife, Karen, all of Berlin; step-sons, Ronnie Combs and wife, Phyllis of Lexington, S.C. and Russell Combs and wife, Abby of Florida; a step-daughter, Bonnie Dennis of Willards; grandchildren, Carol Lynn Littleton and husband, Kenny, Kimberly Jones and husband, Mike, Suzanne Truitt and husband, Joe, Tom Henman, Bryan Widgeon and wife, Nettie and Jason Widgeon; great grandchildren, Ryan Powell, Andrew Truitt, Bradley Widgeon and Cash Widgeon; and a great great grandson, Karson Powell. Frank Anthony Cascio

OCEAN CITY — Frank Anthony Cascio, 80, of Ocean City and formerly of Baltimore and Fallston, passed away on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Baltimore, on Jan. 18, 1936, he was a son of the late Rosario Cascio and Catherine Imbragulio Cascio. He had been making his home in Ocean City for the past 40 years.

Frank worked as a meat cutter in Baltimore and after an injury on the job, went to work in Fallston as a draftsman. He later moved his family to Ocean City and purchased The Golden Charm Rooms and Apartments where he was owner and operator for more than 30 years. He loved his job and the relationships he formed with his annual tenants over the years.Obits E-Cascio

He had a great love for the water and enjoyed fishing, crabbing, the beach, and the Boardwalk. He also adored poodles and had them as pets throughout his life. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, and especially loved being with his grandson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Raffaella D. Esposito Cascio; two sons, Frank J. Cascio and his son Colby of Ocean City, and Joseph M. Cascio and his wife Christy and their children Heather Cascio of Florida and Joey Cascio, Jr. of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters, including a twin brother.

BERLIN — Eneken Frischkorn, age 72, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2016 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Estonia, she was the daughter of the late Johannes and Nina Kaup. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Frischkorn. She is survived by her daughter, Katherine Hearne-Bixler and her husband Michael of Wilmington, Del., and two grandchildren, Jade Cornia and her husband Jeremy and Jeff Hearne and his wife Taryne.

Andrea Ayers Straka

BERLIN — Andrea Ayers Straka, age 37, died peacefully on March 28, 2016 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Born in Salisbury, she was the daughter of entertainer George Straka and the late Margaret “Peggy” Wimbrow Straka. She is survived by her four step-sisters, Kelsey Marie Straka, Sara Elizabeth Straka, Pamela Meninger Straka and Michelle Straka Fountain. She also leaves her devoted friend Bill Mumma of Berlin.

Ms. Straka was a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School Class of 1996, and a 2003 graduate (Summa Cum Laude) of Towson University. While attending Towson, she founded and chaired a sorority dedicated to helping needy children. She was also an animal rights activist. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 2 at 2:30 p.m. at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Rev Ron Schatz will officiate. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park near Berlin.

Harriet Beatty Johnson

WEST HILLS, Calif — Harriet Beatty Johnson, passed away on March 1, 2016, at home in West Hills, Calif.

She was the daughter of Margaret “Margie” Sullivan Beatty and Robert H. Beatty, both deceased. She leaves her beloved son, Jeffrey James Johnson, of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Barbara “Bobbie” Beatty Corbett and her husband, Paul, of Ocean Pines; and a brother, Michael Kent Beatty, and his wife, Cindy, of Ocean City.

Harriet was a flight attendant for American Airlines for 36 years. She lived most of her life in California, except for a few years in Ocean Pines after her retirement. She was most proud of her teen years as a committee member on the Buddy Deane Show.

A celebration of her life will be held at Fager’s Island in Ocean City with a musical tribute to her era, on Monday, April 11, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m.

 

Roland Merrill Collins

SNOW HILL — Roland Merrill Collins, age 68, of Snow Hill, passed away on April 1, 2016 at his home.

He was born in Gumboro, Del. on March 16, 1948. Roland served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed model trains, built a replica model of the town of Snow Hill, was a musician and played the guitar, was a master craftsman, enjoyed spending time at the Pocomoke River Canoe Company but most of all loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by fiancée Patricia Hudson, sons Trent A. (Kelly) Collins, James Hudson, grandchildren Charity Dukes, Tyler Collins, Hannah Collins, Catherine Sterling and Alec Hudson, great grandchildren Camden Dukes and Sadie Ann Sterling, mother-in-law Alice Adkins, daughter-in-law Laura Goff, brother Wayne (Mary Alice) Collins, sisters Rachel (Dale) Rust and Barbara (Bryant) Collins, Aunt Charlotte Clark and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, Merrill W. and Gladys Rodgers Collins; brother, Ervin L. Collins; and sisters, Carolyn C. Joseph and Becky C. Murray.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, April 11, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Pocomoke River Canoe Company, 2 River St., Snow Hill, Md. Friends may call starting at 5 p.m. Interment private. OCEAN CITY — Warren James Rowe, age 92, died Wednesday, March 29, 2016 at his daughter’s home in Stevensville.

Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Warren Albert Rowe and Margaret James Rowe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arabelle King Rowe; daughter, Margaret Lynn Rowe; son, Warren J. Rowe, Jr., and brother, William A. Rowe, Jr. Surviving are his children, Randy Holofcener of Stevensville, Barbara Ann Malone and her husband Gene of Coronado, Calif., daughter-in-law Patty Cook Rowe of Ocean City, sister-in-law Dorothy Rowe of Easton and devoted friends Barbara and Robert Warner of Ocean City. There are four grandchildren, Sean Malone, Casey Malone, Warren J. Rowe, III and Tyler Rowe, and three great-grandchildren, David Malone, Benjamin Malone and Madison Rowe.

Mr. Rowe was a United States Navy veteran and graduate of Washington College, Class of 1949. He owned and operated an insurance agency. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, former member of the Towson Lions Club and an avid Orioles and Ravens fan. He moved to Ocean City after his retirement. He was fiercely independent, loved people and was an eternal optimist. Those who knew him will have memories that always come with a smile.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park near Berlin. OCEAN CITY — June Rose Jordan, age 85, passed away March 27, 2016 at the Berlin Nursing Home. She was formerly of St. Louis, Mo. and from Ocean City. Interment will be private.

OCEAN CITY — Life-long native and local historian of Ocean City Suzanne Brittingham Hurley, age 79, passed away on April 5, 2016 with her loving family in attendance.

One of the last residents to be born in Ocean City, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Grace Cropper Brittingham. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, George M. Hurley in 2015. She is survived by her children, Jeffery Hurley and his wife Sandy, Mark Hurley, Eric Hurley and Daphne S. Hurley, all of Ocean City. She was an adored grandmother to eight grandchildren, Amanda Hammond, Sarah Hurley Mack, Leslie Hurley, Chloe Hurley, Megan Hurley, Emily Hurley, Tucker Hurley and Dillon Lucas, and one great-grandchild, Teague Hammond. Also surviving is her sister, Betty LaLuNunez, and brother, Paul Brittingham. Preceding her in death were her brothers, Johnny and David Brittingham.

Suzanne lived a big life, starting with the honor of being the last “May Queen” at Ocean City High School. From there she became beloved den mother of Boy Scout Troup 261 for many years. She was a successful businesswoman, owning “Country Kitchen” and “Hurley Antiques”. Her biggest pride and joy was helping to found the Ocean City Life Saving Museum, and was instrumental in having the building moved to its location now at the end of the Boardwalk, where she served as curator for many years. Suzanne was a world traveler and co-pilot to George in life, love and on their many adventures. Her favorite retreats were Cedar Island and Elliott’s Island. She also loved horse racing, gardening and was an avid reader. She was the recipient of the Lower Eastern Shore Heritage Council’s Heritage Award and Gems of Worcester County Award. Suzanne Hurley was a true “jewel” in Ocean City’s crown and will be dearly missed.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 3 p.m. at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Rev. Olin Shockley will officiate. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Berlin.
