Walter Hagan Smith

BERLIN — Walter “Walt” Hagan Smith, 91, passed away Sept. 8, 2015 at his residence in Catonsville.

Walter H. Smith

Walter H. Smith

He was born March 5, 1924 to John Walter and Elizabeth Hagan Smith and was raised outside of Salisbury in Allen. One of the highlights of his youth were the many summer months he spent working at his grandparent’s hotel, The Maryland Inn, located on the Boardwalk of Ocean City. In 1942, he began studying electrical engineering but was called to duty with the US Army in 1943 where he proudly served with the 1262nd Engineer Combat Battalion in England, France, Belgium and Germany during WWII.

After being honorably discharged in 1946, Walt resumed studies at University of Maryland and graduated in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduating, he joined the Eastern Shore Public Service Company in Salisbury as an Assistant Distribution Engineer. With an opportunity to further advance his career, Walt moved to Southern Maryland in 1953 where he began his career with Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO). He married the love of his life, Norma Jean Timmons, on Nov. 26, 1953 and enjoyed 58 years of marriage until her passing in 2011.

In addition to his accomplished career at SMECO, Walt was very active in both professional and civic organizations. Some of the organizations in which he was actively involved include IEEE, a registered Professional Engineer, Director of the United Way of Charles County, member and past president of the Waldorf Lions Club, member and Past Master of St. Columba Masonic Lodge, member of Scottish Rite, Boumi Temple Shrine, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and St. James Parish. He was also a Director of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, the Charles County Chamber of Commerce.

After 36 years of service wherein the cooperative grew into one of the largest rural electric cooperatives in the United States, Walt retired from SMECO in 1989 as the Executive Vice President. After retirement, Walt and Norma spent 15 years entertaining family and many friends at their residences in Heritage Harbor, Annapolis and Ocean City, where they enjoyed beautiful sunsets, the daily parade of boats returning from a day of fishing and walking.

Walt was a generous and loving man to his family and friends and was a great role model to many. He was appreciated for his gentle manner and sense of humor.

Lowell Franklin “Gus” Eggert

OCEAN CITY — Rear Admiral Lowell Franklin “Gus” Eggert, 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015 in his home in Ocean City.

Lowell Franklin Eggert

Lowell Franklin Eggert

Lowell was born in Milwaukee, Wis. in 1929 to Frank John Eggert and Caroline Heppert. Family called him “Bill” or “Brother”. On June 7, 1952, he married Dolores Stella Conlin of Philadelphia and they raised seven children together. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Corrine (Eggert) Herrmann.

Admiral Eggert, nicknamed “Gus” by classmates, graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1952. After serving as the navigator on an aircraft carrier, he reported to Pensacola, Fla. for flight training earning his designation as a Naval Aviator on 23 December 1954. He then completed several Caribbean and Mediterranean cruises as an attack pilot before graduating from the Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Md., where he then served as an Ordinance Test Project Pilot. Later in his career he returned to TPS as the Deputy Director and Chief Flight Instructor. He transitioned to the Pacific and assumed command of Attack Squadron, VA-192, flying many combat missions in the A4-F Skyhawk over Vietnam. During the height of the Vietnam air war, Commander Eggert led extensive combat missions as the Commander of Carrier Air Wing Nine (CVW-9), including the largest air-to-air engagement of the war. CVW-9 was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation under his leadership. Subsequent assignments included command of the amphibious landing ship, USS Denver (LPD-9) followed by command of the aircraft carrier USS Constellation (CV-64) in1974. After then being selected for flag rank, he served as the Commander of Fleet Air Forces Western Pacific, based in Atsugi, Japan, and as the Inspector General for the U.S. Atlantic Fleet and Atlantic Command. He retired from active naval service in October 1983, yet remained engaged with the Navy volunteering his service as the President of the Board of the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum Association in Lexington Park, Md. His awards include the Navy Cross, Silver Star, Legion of Merit and Five Distinguished Flying Crosses.

Gus Eggert was much more than an accomplished and decorated naval officer. His biggest achievements came from the quiet unsung acts of a dedicated family man. He was a loyal and loving husband to his wife Dee through sixty-three years of marriage and frequent family moves. Gus and Dee together instilled in each of their seven children the importance of faith, respect, family trust and education. The Eggert family of nine came together each evening for dinner, attended Mass every Sunday and drove across country with their dogs in one vehicle numerous times. He was a fun dad and shared his love for camping, sailing and skiing with his children. At a young age, he taught them all how to tie a good knot, safely handle a jackknife, build a lean-to, start a fire in the rain, and find the direction of the wind, clean water and the North Star. He loved to tinker with boats and cars and build things from scrap lumber. He enjoyed a good story, always had a garden and never let the birdfeeders go empty. He was a kind man who loved animals, his family and butter pecan ice cream.

Admiral Eggert is survived by his devoted wife Dolores (Conlin) Eggert, and children Christopher Eggert and his wife Karen of Huntington, Md., Michael Eggert of San Francisco, Calif., Martha McWatters and her husband Bernard of Coronado, Calif., Kathleen Lucero and her husband Joseph of Columbia, Mo., Frank Eggert of Arlington, Va., Peter Eggert and his wife Amy of Brookfield, Wis., and Gussie Sholtis and her husband Tom of Berlin. OCEAN CITY — An aspiring model, exceptional aunt and an awesome source of light in this world has fought her fourth and final round of leukemia this past year and is finally at peace. She was born April 20, 1991 and died on Dec. 29, 2015.

Heather Nicole Byrd

Heather Nicole Byrd

A graduate of Mervo High School (2009) in Baltimore City and a recent local, though she been visiting with her father for the past 12 years, an employee of OC Steamers and attended Wor-Wic upon moving locally up until this last round of her leukemia.

Eight years into her fight starting at the age of 16, she had truly become a source of inspiration and a beacon of hope to everyone. Always accepting of others regardless of their flaws and shortcomings, giving more than she received and touching people’s hearts all around her.

She is survived by her father and grandfather (Kenneth Byrd Jr. and Sr.); brother, Johnathan; aunt Kim; nephew Lil Kenny and, of course, Gizmo (her yorkie).

Even though never fully achieving her full dream, she had done a shoot in modern hair and had photo cover of a book published in Germany.

Heather has truly touched and blessed all of those she has come upon and will be truly cherished and remebered for all eternity.

Rest in peace Heather, daddy loves and misses you.

John Leon Donaway

BERLIN — John Leon Donaway died on Dec. 27, 2015 in Boca Raton, Fla.

Mr. Donaway was born on Jan. 19, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pa., and grew up in Millsboro, Del. There he first displayed his talent for hard work when, at age 10, he handled two daily afternoon newspaper delivery routes. When he was 12 years old, he added a job working at King’s Dairy Farm beginning at 5 a.m. each day. An admittedly average student, his outgoing personality resulted in his being elected president of his class for all four years at Millsboro High School. He often said that the most beneficial subject he took in high school was typing, a skill he enthusiastically pursued in his correspondence and memoirs until his death.

John Leon Donaway

John Leon Donaway

Mr. Donaway served in the Merchant Marine in World War II and moved to Berlin thereafter with his wife, the former Josephine Marie Villani. Together they owned and operated the Elk Horn Cottages at Route 50 and Stephen Decatur Highway, before establishing John Donaway Furniture, Inc. in 1954 on Main Street in Berlin. In the late 1960s, recognizing the potential for business growth to follow the condominium building boom, they expanded the furniture business into Ocean City with the opening of their Montego Bay store.

Mr. Donaway served as a director at Calvin B. Taylor Bank in Berlin until mandatory retirement at age 70. He was an early member of the Berlin Lions Club. He served as president of the Dunes Club of Ocean City and was a member of the first Parish Council of St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Ocean City.

After his retirement and sale of the furniture business in 1975, Mr. and Mrs. Donaway enjoyed an active social life, spending winters in Florida, where Mr. Donaway served in various positions at Royal Palms Yacht & Country Club in Boca Raton. Their summers were spent at their beach house in Ocean City, where Mr. Donaway enjoyed attending Dunes Club functions, and, particularly, hosting annual reunions of his Millsboro High School class.

After his wife Josephine’s death, Mr. Donaway was married in 2002 to his surviving wife, the former Nancy Molot, who was his loving companion and then, his devoted caretaker, until his death.

Mr. Donaway is survived by a special niece, Elaine Davis; a daughter, Diane Sherrigan, of Rehoboth Beach Del.; two grandsons, Harold B. Gordy III and wife, Timothy, of Berlin, and John T. Gordy and wife, Kim, of Williamsburg, Va.; as well as six great-grandsons.

Interment in Boca Raton, Fla. was private at Mr. Donaway’s request.
